For the second time I am running for Chief Justice. This is of course a crucial position as it is the region’s only elected judicial position and currently the only judicial officer in the region, period. As you have already seen, the Chief Justice sets the standard for the region’s legal process and at this crucial period in our history, with a new legal system that is only 6 months old, establishes our legal precedent. Judgment and temperament are paramount in this role. I believe the cases that have come forward in the last 6 months and the work I have done establishing court procedure and rules demonstrate my capability and worthiness for this role.
After 6 months with our new legal system, we have clearly linked the old system to the new one through a crucial judicial review upholding Cosmo’s indefinite ban from holding office. We also have enshrined the right of citizens to designate a main nation for the purposes of maintaining their citizenship, avoiding a potentially thorny legal question. Criminal trials have also demonstrated a variety of acceptable and appropriate consequences for wrongdoing, and we have successfully had a trial showing the process for recusal.
The important work in setting up the Court has been finished. This doesn’t mean there isn’t possibly room for improvement or additional changes to be made. We have already seen debates involving how to ensure the process is fair and that every possible conflict or scenario that may lead to a constitutional or judicial crisis is nipped in the bud, and I suspect we will continue to have those debates. I believe that many know where I stand on many of these issues and also know that the integrity of the Court and the legal system in general is a great a concern of mine, and will continue to be one in the term ahead.
I ask again for your vote so I may continue lending my experience and talent to guarding and maintaining this vital aspect of our regional life and government. I would be happy to address any comments or questions you have.
