WORLD ASSEMBLY GENERAL ASSEMBLY
DEBTOR VOTING RIGHTS
DELEGATE IS VOTING: FOR ✓
FINAL RESULTS:
9,614 (57.9%) FOR
6,991 (42.1%) AGAINST
Overview
Debtor Voting Rights is an extremely short resolution that seeks to, "Bar member nations from invoking a person's debts as reason to deprive that person of the right to vote."
Author's Justification
With the current vote being relatively close in the World Assembly (9,377 for to 6,341 against), I am going to summarize some of the arguments in the discussion thread.
The author, Imperium Anglorum of Europe, first defends this resolution as not being too short for consideration because the WA has passed shorter resolutions, as seen here in Historical Resolution #4: UN Taxation Ban. The author then states the following:
There are already two drafts to submitted repeal this proposal, one by Concrete Slab of The South Pacific and the other by Wallenburg of The East Pacific. The first draft argues that the proposal lacks sufficient explanation as to how it will be enforced, and that the draft's author believes, "It should be decided by each individual administration whether debtors should be allowed voting rights," and, "further believing debtors forfeit their right to vote by incurring excess debt." The second draft merely argues that the proposal is too short (though the repeal draft is even shorter).
My Decision
Despite the length and lack of additional provisions, this resolution seeks to ensure one's right to vote cannot be denied for the accumulation of debt, and for nations who are similar to the United States, almost everyone has some form of debt and would suffer the consequences if a nation's government decided to enact such a punishment.
I have cast my vote in favor of this resolution, and I encourage you to do the same.
